Derek Rose: Hipster Trunks – Review

Derek Rose is a proud English label that specializes in tailored nightwear, loungewear, and underwear. The brand dates all the way back to 1926 and remains steadfast in its founders, Derek Rose, and his father Lou Rose’s original vision; to create luxury garments that are immaculately crafted out of the finest materials possible.

I’ve heard so much about Derek Rose in the past.. that I figured that it was time to give them a try. I ended up getting a pair of their “Hipster Trunks.” TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-2.jpg

The packaging itself is nicely designed/put together.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the box has a magnetic closure which just upped the overall experience of unboxing the product. I just love little details that let me know that a brand has literally thought through everything.

TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-4.jpgOne of the most important things that I look for in clothing is the type of fabric used.

These trunks are constructed out of 92% Pima cotton and 8% Elastane. This tells me that the garment is going to stretch well due to the elastane and it’s going to be really soft and breathable because of the Pima cotton.

Pima cotton is grown in only a few select countries around the world and is in my opinion one of the softest types of cotton out on the market. If something is made out of Pima cotton that becomes a huge selling point for me.

One of the details that I really liked and found unique to Derek Rose was the way that the elastic band was sewn onto the trunks. If you look over the picture above, you will see that the band is literally sewn completely over the fabric. Thus solving the problem of having the elastic band pull on any body hair or having it uncomfortably dig into your skin. TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-6.jpg

Another impressive factor is that there really aren’t that many seams. As you can see the back is one solid sheet of fabric.TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-8.jpg

Another notable details is that Derek Rose’s initials are subtly embroidered onto the elastic band. TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-9.jpg

Just so you can get an idea of how they fit.. I’ve added a picture of a model wearing the same style of trunks just in an alternate print.

In Conclusion

Super soft, breathable, non bulky, stretch fabric gives you an enjoyable wearing experience.

Innovative waist band helps prevent any chances of the band digging into your skin and/or pulling any body hair throughout the day.

These trunks do however run on the pricier side of the spectrum and retail for £34.00 (USD $50.00). Not for nothing I do believe that you are paying for a well thought out product as opposed to simply paying for a name brand with a subpar product.

Buscemi 100mm: Review

I don’t know what it is.. but within the last couple of years I have developed this awkward obsession with high top sneakers. Needless to say when I first saw the iconic Buscemi 100mm shoe I was done… I knew that I needed to add these puppies to my collection.

Buscemi is an extremely new luxury brand; having just launched its first collection in 2013.   Whenever a brand is new.. I’m always a little bit leery.. especially when the price point is high. I was also a little concerned since I had heard that Buscemi recently changed manufacturers and they were experiencing various issues with their keys/padlocks breaking. Taking this into consideration I ended up buying my Buscemi’s from a Neiman Marcus in Atlanta (while I was traveling). When I got home I tested the key and padlock on each shoe… sure enough one of the keys broke. TJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-2.jpg

As you can see the top key is the one that broke and the bottom key is the one that is still intact. To be really honest.. I understand the padlock on these shoes are just for show but these keys are kind of a joke.. especially given the price point of this label. On a side note.. I am not a fan of how the ends of the leather pieces that hold each key were finished. You can see the frayed parts of the thread just hanging out all over the place.. again for what you pay I would expect the product to be more polished.

I immediately contacted Buscemi’s customer service about the broken key. It took them a couple days to get back to me. They didn’t have any white padlocks/keys in inventory so they ended up sending me a replacement pair in gold.

I put both padlocks and keys from each set next to each other so you can compare and contrast between the two. The new padlock and key set are 100 times better then what my shoes originally came with. Even though I really loved the white on white on white look lol.. I will say that having the padlock in gold really makes them stand out.

If you are considering purchasing a pair of Buscemi’s I would definitely still recommend them. The incident with the faulty padlocks/keys in my opinion was one of those extemporaneous situations and I don’t believe that it was purposeful negligence on Buscemi’s side of things. Sometimes these things happen especially when a company is new and is growing/expanding. What’s important to me is that their customer service handled the situation well by quickly and professionally resolving it. Also it appears as though they are consistently looking for ways to improve the quality/design of their shoes… but only time will truly tell.

With any purchase (especially on those luxury products with a higher price tag..) I would always advise reading multiple reviews so you can know what too expect and find out if there are any major issues worth noting before taking the plunge and purchasing the product. Also always look over clothes, shoes, or accessories before buying them to make sure that there are no no visible flaws.

This is what the shoes looked like when I first bought them with the white padlocks. TJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-5.jpg

The dust bag is made out of a stiff cotton linen material and has “Buscemi” embossed in gold on the front of the bag.  TJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-6.jpgTJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-7.jpgTJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-8.jpg

TJ21: Unboxing/Try On – @Pantherella

Pantherella is an English brand that has specialized in luxury socks for both men and women since 1937. All of their products are proudly made in Leicester England.

During the warmer months I like to wear shoe liners with my drivers, espadrilles, and even some of my high-tops. I actually found these on and decided to give them a try. They come in three different colors; white, black, and nude.

I ended up choosing just the black and the nude pairs. I didn’t go with the white simply because the struggle is real with the maintenance of white socks.

These socks are definitely more on the expensive side of the spectrum when compared to other options in the market. Each pair retails for $12.00 (USD). They are 100% worth it, after trying them on and wearing them out I can honestly say that at this point in the game these are by far my favorite pairs of shoe liners. These are the only no-show socks that I own that actually stay on my feet without me having to readjust them throughout the day. They fit comfortably on my feet and they are made out of a lightweight breathable Egyptian cotton blend. Like most shoe-liners they have a built in heel grip. The heel grip is effective and doesn’t add bulk to the actual heel of the sock. If that wasn’t enough to win you over.. these socks are treated with an antibacterial finish to them. Whoever was in charge of designing these socks did an amazingly thorough job. I will definitely be purchasing more in the future. Below I will leave you with the links for these socks:

TJ21: Dsquared2 – Satellite High Tops

I recently bought a pair of DSQUARED2’s Satellite hightop sneakers. These shoes are a re-occurring style in the DSQUARED2 collection. Each season they introduce them in a new color scheme. Also these sneakers are my very first pair of DSQUARED2 hightops; so I was pretty stoked to add them to my collection.TJ21-dsquared2-sneakers-hightops-satellite-1

The shoebox is pretty simple/minimalistic which I really like.

These shoes did come along with a dustbag for storage/travel.

I absolutely love the color of these hightops; it’s such a bold choice of blue. These sneakers are made in Italy and they are made out of goat leather. Usually shoes (and pretty much any other accessory/clothing item) that are constructed out of a leather.. are made from cowhide. The main differences between the two leathers are that goat leather is more durable than cowhide and is generally a lighter weighted leather.

DSQUARED2 is a Canadian label and they often incorporate the maple leaf into their designs. The soles of these shoes are slightly angled in the front so that when you walk it’s more comfortable/ergonomic.

Overall Thoughts:

I have been able to do a significant amount of walking in these shoes since purchasing them. The first couple of times when I wore them they were a bit snug around the front part (toe vamp) of the shoe. However the leather did stretch out so now it’s not a problem. The gold “DSQUARED2” hot stamped on the insoles rubbed off completely within the first couple days of wearing them. Aside from these extremely minor issues these have been one of my favorite pairs of trainers to wear this summer.

TJ21: Unboxing – Givenchy

TJ21-Givenchy-High-Tops-1 I recently bought the Givenchy Tyson high top sneakers from Barney’s New York department store. As you can see they come in a plain white box with “Givenchy” written on the box lid.

TJ21-Givenchy-High-Tops-2I really like how Givenchy packs their shoes. Typically speaking most designer labels include one or two dust bags for the shoes however usually the dust bag(s) comes folded on top of the shoes in the box. Givenchy actually places the shoes in the dust bag for an added layer of protection.

TJ21-Givenchy-High-Tops-3When you take the shoes out  of the box you’ll find that there is (for lack of a better term) a certificate of authenticity. TJ21-Givenchy-High-Tops-4 I know that every year Givenchy comes out with a couple new variations of the Tyson sneaker. These high tops are made in Italy and are made from 100% calf leather which is extremely soft to the the touch. I got mine in a size 42 which was literally a perfect fit for me. I would say that these sneakers do run true to size. The details on these shoes are seriously amazing and the craftsmanship is immaculate. On a comfort scale of 1-10 (10 being the most comfortable pair of shoes I’ve ever walked in #imwalkingonsunshinestatus) I would give these shoes an 7.7. The only thing that I’m not wild about are the white soles.. just because I feel they would get dirty really fast.. but overall I’m extremely pleased with this purchase.

TJ21: What’s In My Closet? – Fendi

TJ21 WIMC FendiTJ21 WIMC Fendi 2 What I love about this wallet is that while it may be wicked compact it still can hold a lot! It has six card slots and one middle compartment for cash.  Another cool attribute is that the Fendi monogram is so subtle you honestly would have to be looking extremely hard in order to see it. Overall this is an excellent wallet for everyday use.

TJ21: What’s In My Closet?

TJ21 WIMC DG 1I just got a pair of sunnies from Dolce & Gabbana. 😀TJ21 WIMC DG 2 Pictured above.. is what came with the sunglasses. The case is very sporty and has a zipper closure. The sunglasses also came with authenticity papers, a lens wipe and I honestly don’t know the technical name for it.. but that thing that holds your glasses when you play sports so that they don’t fall and break.. TJ21 WIMC DG 3When it comes to shades.. I’m partial to anything in the aviator family. I also, 98% of the time will gravitate towards gradient lenses. I normally don’t like noticeable brand markings.. but I actually don’t mind the “Dolce & Gabbana” metal detail on the side of the glasses. What initially drew me to these sunnies was the blue frames. I think it’s a pretty cool/fresh look.
