Derek Rose: Hipster Trunks – Review

TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-1.jpg

Derek Rose is a proud English label that specializes in tailored nightwear, loungewear, and underwear. The brand dates all the way back to 1926 and remains steadfast in its founders, Derek Rose, and his father Lou Rose’s original vision; to create luxury garments that are immaculately crafted out of the finest materials possible.

I’ve heard so much about Derek Rose in the past.. that I figured that it was time to give them a try. I ended up getting a pair of their “Hipster Trunks.” TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-2.jpg

The packaging itself is nicely designed/put together.

TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-3.jpg

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the box has a magnetic closure which just upped the overall experience of unboxing the product. I just love little details that let me know that a brand has literally thought through everything.

TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-4.jpgOne of the most important things that I look for in clothing is the type of fabric used.

These trunks are constructed out of 92% Pima cotton and 8% Elastane. This tells me that the garment is going to stretch well due to the elastane and it’s going to be really soft and breathable because of the Pima cotton.

Pima cotton is grown in only a few select countries around the world and is in my opinion one of the softest types of cotton out on the market. If something is made out of Pima cotton that becomes a huge selling point for me.

One of the details that I really liked and found unique to Derek Rose was the way that the elastic band was sewn onto the trunks. If you look over the picture above, you will see that the band is literally sewn completely over the fabric. Thus solving the problem of having the elastic band pull on any body hair or having it uncomfortably dig into your skin. TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-6.jpg

Another impressive factor is that there really aren’t that many seams. As you can see the back is one solid sheet of fabric.TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-8.jpg

Another notable details is that Derek Rose’s initials are subtly embroidered onto the elastic band. TJ21-Derek-Rose-Hipster-Trunks-Review-Underwear-London-9.jpg

Just so you can get an idea of how they fit.. I’ve added a picture of a model wearing the same style of trunks just in an alternate print.

In Conclusion

Super soft, breathable, non bulky, stretch fabric gives you an enjoyable wearing experience.

Innovative waist band helps prevent any chances of the band digging into your skin and/or pulling any body hair throughout the day.

These trunks do however run on the pricier side of the spectrum and retail for £34.00 (USD $50.00). Not for nothing I do believe that you are paying for a well thought out product as opposed to simply paying for a name brand with a subpar product.

Buscemi 100mm: Review

TJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-1.jpg

I don’t know what it is.. but within the last couple of years I have developed this awkward obsession with high top sneakers. Needless to say when I first saw the iconic Buscemi 100mm shoe I was done… I knew that I needed to add these puppies to my collection.

Buscemi is an extremely new luxury brand; having just launched its first collection in 2013.   Whenever a brand is new.. I’m always a little bit leery.. especially when the price point is high. I was also a little concerned since I had heard that Buscemi recently changed manufacturers and they were experiencing various issues with their keys/padlocks breaking. Taking this into consideration I ended up buying my Buscemi’s from a Neiman Marcus in Atlanta (while I was traveling). When I got home I tested the key and padlock on each shoe… sure enough one of the keys broke. TJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-2.jpg

As you can see the top key is the one that broke and the bottom key is the one that is still intact. To be really honest.. I understand the padlock on these shoes are just for show but these keys are kind of a joke.. especially given the price point of this label. On a side note.. I am not a fan of how the ends of the leather pieces that hold each key were finished. You can see the frayed parts of the thread just hanging out all over the place.. again for what you pay I would expect the product to be more polished.

I immediately contacted Buscemi’s customer service about the broken key. It took them a couple days to get back to me. They didn’t have any white padlocks/keys in inventory so they ended up sending me a replacement pair in gold.

TJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-3.jpg

I put both padlocks and keys from each set next to each other so you can compare and contrast between the two. The new padlock and key set are 100 times better then what my shoes originally came with. Even though I really loved the white on white on white look lol.. I will say that having the padlock in gold really makes them stand out.

IN CONClUSION

If you are considering purchasing a pair of Buscemi’s I would definitely still recommend them. The incident with the faulty padlocks/keys in my opinion was one of those extemporaneous situations and I don’t believe that it was purposeful negligence on Buscemi’s side of things. Sometimes these things happen especially when a company is new and is growing/expanding. What’s important to me is that their customer service handled the situation well by quickly and professionally resolving it. Also it appears as though they are consistently looking for ways to improve the quality/design of their shoes… but only time will truly tell.

With any purchase (especially on those luxury products with a higher price tag..) I would always advise reading multiple reviews so you can know what too expect and find out if there are any major issues worth noting before taking the plunge and purchasing the product. Also always look over clothes, shoes, or accessories before buying them to make sure that there are no no visible flaws.

BUSCEMI 100MM IN WHITE

This is what the shoes looked like when I first bought them with the white padlocks. TJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-5.jpg

The dust bag is made out of a stiff cotton linen material and has “Buscemi” embossed in gold on the front of the bag.  TJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-6.jpgTJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-7.jpgTJ21-buscemi-100mm-review-white-hightops-8.jpg

Lastly the above photo shows what the shoes look like with the new gold padlocks.

TJ21: Criminal Damage Tower High Tops- Review

I recently discovered Criminal Damage which is a brand that is based out of East London. I immediately fell in love with the brands’ aesthetic which I would describe as very fun/young/urban.

When I saw these “Tower” high-tops I knew I definitely needed to pick them up.

TJ21-Criminal-Damage-High-tops-Tower-red-1

This is the box that the shoes come in. Overall a pretty clean design; It’s kind of hard to make out in the photo.. but they used a  reflective silver metallic paint for the print.

TJ21-Criminal-Damage-High-tops-Tower-red-2

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that these trainers came with a dustbag. The fabric that the dustbag is made out of is a  lightweight synthetic blend and bears the same print as the box lid but instead of the metallic color they used a matte white.

TJ21-Criminal-Damage-High-tops-Tower-red-3

The shoes have heaps of details. The closer you look at them the more details you see. There are three different textured fabrics that were used in the construction of these shoes. Also note that these trainers are made out of synthetic leather. The contrasting black band that goes across the middle of the shoe has the words “Criminal Damage” marked on it; which I thought was a really cool touch. Lastly you can see the Fleur de Lis imprinted on the shoes tongue.

The price point of these shoes not including taxes or shipping costs comes to £85.00 / $131.60 (on the Criminal Damage site) or you can find them on ASOS for £93.70 / $145.00. Keep in mind if you are living in the UK it’s cheaper to purchase these shoes from the Criminal Damage site because they offer free shipping within the UK on all orders over £50. If you are in America I would probably recommend getting this shoes from ASOS. They offer free shipping to the states on orders over $40. Plus they offer free returns so just in case things don’t work out it’s pretty hassle free to make a return.

The Break Down:

While these shoes are not super expensive they are by no means cheap. The details featured on these shoes are tasteful and definitely not over the top.  The unexpected bonus dust bag was a great touch as well.

However.. for the price point.. my main and probably only critique for these high tops are that I wish that they used real leather for their construction. I’m just not 100% confident on the durability of the imitation leather that they used and these are definitely a pair of shoes that I hope to have for a long time.

TJ21: rOunderBum – Review

TJ21 Rounderbum ReviewI really enjoy discovering new brands! So when Rounderbum contacted me about doing a product review for them I was pretty stoked!! Rounderbum as a brand specializes in making shapewear for both men and women. To be fair, at the moment they have more products available for men than for women.. which is a major shocker because usually it is the other way around. To be honest I’ve never really thought much about shapewear for men.. or shapewear in general..  So this was actually a very educational experience for me. lol

TJ21 Rounderbum Review 2 For those of you who are unfamiliar with shapewear products in general.. it’s basically undergarments that are designed to enhance your bodies appearance. For example (the picture above) the model is wearing a pair of Rounderbum trunks that are designed to enhance his backside. There are also other areas of the body that shapewear enhances such as undershirts which are strategically designed to hold in a bit of a gut.

THE REVIEW

Rounderbum sent me a pair of basic white boxer brief trunks. I will be reviewing the following three things:

  1. Packaging
  2. Product
  3. Price

Packaging:

TJ21 Rounderbum Review 3

I was pleasantly impressed when I received my pair of Rounderbum trunks. When my trunks came in the mail they came in a cardboard box and inside that box was a proper underwear box sealed in a plastic wrap. The box the underwear came in is really nice! It even has a magnetic closure (Very fancy lol). I liked the information (where the product was made, what the product is made out of etc.) that was put on the box; I found it to be pretty helpful.

Product:

TJ21 Rounderbum Review 4

  • Fabric made in Italy
  • 93% Cotton 7% Elastane
  • Product assembled in Mexico
  • Elastic band is about (+/-) 2 inches wide

I will say that one of the things that I had issues was choosing my size. The Rounderbum site at the moment doesn’t provide a size chart. Which may sound dumb.. lol but I know that in one brand/country I can be one size and in another brand/country I can be something extremely different. Plus it’s always hard to gage what size you’ll need when you can’t see the product in person. Fortunately the size I chose did in fact work out.

The elastic waist band is wider than a lot of other brands out on the market. I actually prefer the wider band to a thinner band. I think a lot of it for me has to do with the aesthetics versus any superior function. The band itself is quality and feels really comfortable against the skin.

The fabric used in the body of the boxer briefs is amazing! The fabric is breathable, and has four-way stretch which all contribute to a very comfortable pair of trunks.

The fit of the trunks are really nice. I like that it sits lower on the waist. Overall what I did like about the Rounderbum website was that the pictures of the products are accurate. Basically what I saw online is exactly what I got in person.

Price:

Their prices range  from  around $16 to $70 (USD). However the majority of their merch falls into  the $20 to $25 range; which I would say is pretty fair when it comes to designer underwear. I personally think that it’s worth it just because the quality is there and if you are looking for a little enhancement without the surgery or a temporary fix before hitting the gym.. Rounderbum is indeed a decent option. Below you’ll find a link to their site:
